What We Believe

We Believe, Teach and Confess

The people of Rock of Ages believe, teach and confess the “Gospel”: that God became a real man, Jesus of Nazareth, who we killed on a real cross in real human history - but he didn't stay dead. This was because, as he said, he was the Christ, the King long promised by the God who created the universe, who would come to reign over all mankind by freeing us from our slavery to sin, death and the devil. By rising from the dead, he defeated death and earned the right to offer the forgiveness of sins to you as a free gift.

The Gospel

The word "Gospel" means good news, and it is precisely this free gift of forgiveness, life, and salvation that makes the gospel seem too good to be true. Except that it is true. There is nothing you must do to earn it. There is nothing you can do to achieve it. The only thing in your power to do is to reject this free gift thinking you don't need it. And why would you want to do that? It is simply given.

Committed to this good news as given to us in Scripture alone we trust by faith alone in this total grace alone for-everyone salvation for the sake of Christ alone.

  • Grace Alone (Sola Gratia): God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.
  • Faith Alone (Sola Fide): By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.
  • Scripture Alone (Sola Scriptura): The Bible is God's inerrant and infallible Word, in which He reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the sole rule and norm for Christian doctrine..

If you want to see God, look to Jesus. While we see the world in decay around us, Jesus reveals God's only answer to the problem of evil and death, both in ourselves and in our world.

We Believe

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

These words of the Apostle's Creed, along with the Nicene Creed and Athanasian Creeds, summarize what we as Christians have confessed since the earliest days of the church. They are the Spirit-filled and scriptural beliefs that we teach and confess in the name of Jesus at Rock of Ages.
